GU10 bulbs are the most common base type for spotlights in the home. You'll find them in recessed ceiling fixtures, directional accent lighting and commercial installations. The base has two pins with a twist-and-lock mechanism and connects directly to 230V, without a transformer.

GU10 and MR16 look similar but work differently. GU10 is powered directly from mains voltage (230V) while MR16 is a low voltage lamp (12V) that requires a transformer. This makes GU10 easier to install in the home.
