October 14, 2025

Good lighting is a peace of mind, whether you're at a standstill on a dark road, working in a cramped engine compartment or navigating a path in the forest. But choosing the right portable light can be as difficult as choosing a headlamp. The range is huge and technical specifications can be confusing.

We have identified the most common users of our pocket and head lamps and their requirements. Which lamp is best for you, we believe, depends on your profile. Find the profile that best suits you and we will guide you to the perfect lamp for your purposes!

Who are you and what kind of light do you need?

  1. Car owner: For those who want to be prepared for everything

You know that anything can happen on the road. A tyre change in the dark, an engine breakdown or the need to find something rolled under the seat. Your light needs to be reliable, easy to store in your glove compartment and always ready when an accident happens.

Your perfect solution:

A compact inspection light: Models like our favourite Lenny 2.0 are ideal. It's USB rechargeable, has a bright and wide light, and a magnetic base that you can attach to the bonnet or bodywork to work hands-free.

A flexible headlamp: Osram's LEDinspect headlamp is an excellent choice. It frees up both your hands, which is invaluable when changing a tyre or when you need to see and work at the same time.

  1. The Mechanic & Craftsman: For those who have light as one of their most important tools

You work in environments where details are of great importance. The light must be bright, even and shadow-free. The lamp is a tool that must withstand oil, dirt, shocks and daily use. Reliability and functionality are your top priorities.

Your perfect solution:

A professional inspection lamp: You need a high colour rendering (CRI) rod lamp to see cable colours correctly. A magnetic mount, suspension hook and impact-resistant construction are a must.  https://xenonkungen.com/produkt/smarter-lenny-2-0-inspektionslampa-2/

A robust headlamp: Choose a model with a wide beam (flood) that illuminates your entire work area without creating a glaring centre point. An adjustable brightness is also important to adapt the light to different work tasks. https://xenonkungen.com/produkt/ledinspect-flexible-head-torch/

  1. The Outdoor Enthusiast & Adventurer: For those who want to challenge the dark

You go where street lights don't exist. Whether you're running, hiking, camping or skiing after sunset, you need a high-performance, long-lasting, all-weather light.

Your perfect solution:

A high-performance headlamp: Look for a lamp with a high lumen output, long battery life and multiple light modes, including a red light to preserve night vision. Water resistance (at least IPX7) and a comfortable, stable headband are essential.

A powerful torch: A torch with a focussable light pattern (zoom) is an excellent addition for illuminating objects at very long distances.

Understanding the technology behind the lamp

To compare different models, it is helpful to understand what the specifications actually mean.

  • Lumen (lm): Measures the total light output of the lamp. More lumens are usually better, but that's not all.
  • Light pattern: Describes how light is spread. A wide light pattern (Flood) is ideal for close-up viewing, while a narrow and long light pattern (Spot) is for viewing from a distance. Many lamps have a combination.
  • Battery life: Often given for different brightness levels. Look at the burn time for the mode you think you will use most. A lamp that can hold a lower brightness for a very long time is often more useful than one that can only provide maximum brightness for a few minutes.
  • IP rating: Indicates protection against dust and water. IPX4 means it is splash-proof and can withstand rain. IPX7 means it can be immersed in water for a short time. For outdoor use, IPX4 is the minimum.
  • Rechargeable vs. Batteries: Rechargeable lights (via USB-C) are convenient and economical in the long run. Lights with replaceable batteries (AA/AAA) can be good as an extra security in an emergency as you can always carry a spare set of batteries.
