Flashlight or headlamp? Guide to the right choice

A flashlight can work well on a walk, but when changing a tire or working in the engine compartment, you often need both hands free. Then the question becomes how to get the light to the right place without holding the lamp yourself. The choice between flashlight, headlamp and inspection lamp therefore starts with what you are going to do. Once that is clear, it becomes easier to compare the light pattern, battery life and functions that you will use.

Mechanic uses a headlamp when working under the hood in a workshop.

Choose the lamp according to what your hands need to do

In headlamp suitable when you need to hold tools, carry something or work with both hands. The light follows the movements of the head, which is practical when changing a tire, for example. Try that the lamp can be angled towards the work surface without having to hold your head in an uncomfortable position.

With a flashlight Instead, you can direct the light independently of your head. This can be useful when you are looking for something under your car or want to illuminate a specific point in the distance. Compare the light pattern for the model in question; a flashlight is not automatically longer-range than a headlamp.

In inspection lamp can be placed close to the workpiece and supplement the light from the head. A magnetic base or hook helps when there is a suitable mounting surface. The magnet needs a surface that it actually attaches to, and the lamp should sit firmly in the working position.

Products in the guide

In the car and workshop, light needs to reach past the hands.

Positioning determines whether hands, tools or body parts obscure what you need to see. Check the light with your body in the position where the work will be done. A wide low beam can help you see clearly, while a separate light may be needed to reach behind a detail.

Xenonkungens Headlamp DT-1000 has both spot and diffused light and a sensor to turn on and off with a hand movement. Spot provides a directed light pattern and the diffused light illuminates a wider area. These are functions to consider when working near the car. Sensor control of on/off is a different function than automatic brightness control.

Smarter Lenny 2.0 has a magnetic base, hook and tiltable head. It shows how an inspection lamp can be placed at the work surface instead of following the direction of view. Also check the brightness settings and whether the buttons can be used with work gloves.

A light stored in the car needs to be checked even when it is rarely used. Test it to make sure it works, check the battery, and follow the manufacturer's instructions for storage and temperature. Just because the light is in the glove compartment doesn't mean it will be ready when you need it.

Outdoors, the lighting needs to match the pace and terrain.

Moving on a trail has different requirements than reading something up close. Assess how much of the ground in front of you is illuminated and how far ahead you need to see at your pace. A narrow light far ahead does not always replace lighting at your feet.

Try the headlamp with the hat or gear you usually wear. Weight, battery placement, and headband adjustment will affect how it fits when you move. For a longer trip, charging or access to the right spare battery also needs to be planned.

Ledlenser H19R Core has separately adjustable flood and spot light. This allows you to adjust the light near and further away. Compare the model's weight and operating time in the mode you intend to use, so that the light functions are suitable for the entire trip.

Read light output and battery life for the same mode

Maximum light output and longest battery life may refer to different settings. On the H19R Core, 3,500 lumens are listed for a temporary boost mode and 1,600 lumens for Power mode. The longest stated runtime is for a lower brightness mode. Please read the manufacturer's specifications per mode before comparing to another model.

Check the charging connection and which battery the lamp uses. Rechargeable lamps may have a USB connection, magnetic cable or another solution, and the ability to change the battery varies. For extended use without charging, the spare battery needs to be of the right type for the lamp.

The IP rating needs to be appropriate for the moisture and dust the lamp will be exposed to. Also check the manufacturer's instructions for shock and other impacts; an IP rating does not describe all the stresses in a workshop or outdoors.

When comparing cheaper and more expensive lights, documented features are more useful than price alone. Consider light output, runtime, handling, and replaceable batteries or accessories. This will make it easier to choose a light for the task at hand without buying more light than you need.
