Understanding the technology behind the lamp

To compare different models, it is helpful to understand what the specifications actually mean.

• Lumen (lm): Measures the total light output of the lamp. More lumens are usually better, but that's not all.
• Light pattern: Describes how light is spread. A wide light pattern (Flood) is ideal for close-up viewing, while a narrow and long light pattern (Spot) is for viewing from a distance. Many lamps have a combination.
• Battery life: Often given for different brightness levels. Look at the burn time for the mode you think you will use most. A lamp that can hold a lower brightness for a very long time is often more useful than one that can only provide maximum brightness for a few minutes.
• IP rating: Indicates protection against dust and water. IPX4 means it is splash-proof and can withstand rain. IPX7 means it can be immersed in water for a short time. For outdoor use, IPX4 is the minimum.
• Rechargeable vs. Batteries: Rechargeable lights (via USB-C) are convenient and economical in the long run. Lights with replaceable batteries (AA/AAA) can be good as an extra security in an emergency as you can always carry a spare set of batteries.
