Halogen technology has been around for decades and is still standard in millions of cars. A halogen bulb generates light by heating a tungsten filament in a gas capsule. The technology is simple, cheap and reliable. The disadvantage compared to LED and xenon is shorter lifespan and lower light output.
Standard vs. performance
Standard lamps Meets the car's basic requirements and is the cheapest solution. They provide exactly the same light pattern and brightness as the car was delivered with. Perfect as a quick replacement when a bulb breaks.
Presta lamps (e.g. OSRAM Night Breaker and Philips RacingVision) use optimized gas composition and filament design to squeeze more light out of the same wattage. The result is up to 150% more light on the road compared to standard, with a whiter color temperature. The lifespan is normally slightly shorter than standard.
Replacing halogen bulbs
Always replace bulbs in pairs. If one bulb has broken, the other has the same number of operating hours and will soon break too. In addition, a new and an old bulb can produce uneven light. Never touch the bulb glass with bare fingers – skin oils create hotspots that shorten the lifespan.
