Xenon lamps require a high starting voltage (up to 25,000V) to ignite the arc and then a stable operating voltage of around 85V to keep it alive. The ballast (control unit) handles this entire process. Without a working ballast, the xenon lamp will not light. Each xenon headlight has its own ballast – if the car has xenon in both low beams, there are two ballasts.
A defective ballast usually shows itself as the xenon light not coming on at all, or flickering, flashing or having a pink-purple hue before going off. Sometimes the light works intermittently – coming on after several attempts or going off while driving. If you have replaced the xenon bulb and the problem persists, it is likely the ballast that needs to be replaced.
Check which ballast your car has by reading the part number on the existing ballast. Alternatively, you can search by car model and year. It is important to choose the right type - a ballast for D1S lamps will not work with D2S lamps. We clearly state in each product which lamps and car models it is compatible with.
